Do you need money for your film? Thinking about approaching a film investor? How much do you need? $300k, $1 mil, need more?

To keep things simple, let’s say you need $300k. Now tell your potential investor to go to the convenience store and buy $300k worth of scratch off lottery tickets. What are the odds that they still get zero? -5%, -20%, -50%, break-even, or make a modest profit of $100k (I’m pretty sure there is an uber nerd that can give us those statistics). What are the chances they come out empty-handed? It’s a gamble, right?

How do you minimize risk? Many states offer enticing film incentives, ranging from 20% to 35%. That’s a significant chunk of change back in the investor’s pocket. And that’s just the beginning. If you are smart you are talking to distribution sales agents before pitching your film. Can you get a minimum guarantee or pre-sale? Do you know what film investment tax breaks your investor can take advantage of? Can you do a pre-order for your DVD/Blu-Ray? Four wall theaters and do a limited theatrical release? Keep chopping it off with a realistic game plan!

This is why having a pitch deck engineered to showcase how you plan to succeed is paramount! This is why there is a huge difference between a look book and pitch deck.
