Film Budget Red Flags!

Here are some major red flags on your script and film budget that can really affect your indie film

  • If your script has more than 25 major speaking roles that’s a red flag! For every actor you have, you must pay SAG Health and Pension, Per Diem, Lodging, Travel, and Payroll taxes. So keep that in mind when writing your script. Keep your lead and supporting roles to a minimum.
  • Shooting in a state that doesn’t have a film incentive. You are throwing away a potential 15%-35% return on any money spent if you film in a state where your budget is too low or it doesn’t have a film incentive at all.
  • Locations. Keep them to a minimum but make sure they are cinematic and have plenty of creative spaces you can use. The audience likes variety and if you choose the perfect location where you can have multiple setups and still make it look fresh then that’s perfect.
  • Distribution Deliverables. Once you finish post-production and are ready to put it on the market, you need to budget for distribution deliverables. These are 3rd Party fees you have to pay if you want your film on the major streaming services, DVD, theater, etc. This also includes Chain of Title, Title Report, and Errors and Omissions insurance.
