Do you have a fear of pitching your film?
After years of research and talking shop to fellow filmmakers the number one reason that filmmakers struggle comes down to funding! Especially for projects over $75k. I’m not talking about passion projects that are self funded or crowdfunded but films that need an actual investment.
In my opinion it comes down to three things.
1. Not knowing where to start. Funding is a long and process. There is legal paperwork, pitching material, packaging, film budget, distribution, etc. It’s overwhelming and confusing. Where do you even start?
2. Fear or lack of coincidence in pitching. Asking for money is scary! But do you believe in your project enough to override your initial fears? Crappy films get funded and produced everyday and I guarantee behind those films there was a fearless filmmaker who was completely obsessed with making their film no matter what!
3. Your network is to small. I’m not talking about crew and actors but more established film industry professionals. Do you attend the film markets like AFM, Cannes, Sundance, Berlin? Distribution and funding go hand in hand. Do you have business relationships with people in other industries? Who would you call right now for advice? What is your product (your film) and who is your customer (audience)? Do you need to partner up with a more established producer? What legwork are they going to expect you to have before considering a partnership? Is your script enough?
It all starts with a professional business plan. It’s your road map. A film business plan translates your screenplay into a visual road map that makes sense to film investors.
