10 Reflections to Survive—and Thrive—as a Filmmaker in 2025 and Beyond
Who makes 💯 of their living as a filmmaker?
I still pay my bills as a filmmaker.
Still being the key word.
The market is telling us a few things:
▪️ Budgets are getting cut
▪️ Crews are getting smaller
▪️ Revenue is a speck of what it used to be
▪️ And the audience is craving an experience
So how do we survive 2025 and beyond?
Here’s what I’ve been thinking about:
1. Focus on realistic budgets that increase margins.
2. Limited theatrical releases. Start with 1 theater. Do whatever it takes to get to 35—then scale to 100+. It’s still possible.
3. Your audience is hanging out somewhere. Find them. Offer an affiliate program for shoutouts and emails. Pay if you have to.
4. Collect emails. This is your goldmine. Build your list.
5. Create tie-in products. Merch, books, clothes, plushies, courses. Imagine if I had produced a film before Labubu blew up—and offered the creator a chance for that little weird creature to be in my film for a cut of sales. 🤑
6. Product placement is more powerful than you think. Nike ain’t paying you—but your local brands might. Focus regional.
7. No one is coming to save us.
If all you have is an iPhone and 3 crew members—go for it. Just keep the audience in mind.
8. Ask yourself: How much do I want to earn? $65K? $75K? $100K? Only you can define success for yourself.
9. Everyone needs to think like a producer. Writers. Actors. Directors. Grips. Cinema and business must merge. If business isn’t your strength—partner or hire someone who gets it.
10. I just wrapped 5 commercials in 2 weeks in South Texas. It was humid. Brutal. Long hours. I sat on the grip truck, sweating, and thought to myself:
This is still awesome. Being on set is the dream. That chaotic euphoria is something only filmmakers understand. It reminded me how much I love my crew and actor friends.
